Bengt Lindström, XXL Abstract Black-and-White Composition “Essai lithographique”, a lithograph on BFK Rives paper, 105.5 × 75 cm, dating from 1980–1990, unsigned, in a limited edition, from Sweden.
Description from the seller
Bengt Lindström (1925-2008) — XXL lithographic print, Chamanes series, circa 1985
Artist: Bengt Lindström (1925-2008)
Technique: black lithography on BFK Rives paper
Work: large unpublished print, Chamanes series, circa 1985
Dimensions: about 105.5 × 75 cm
Signature: unsigned
Provenance: succession of editor Claude Manesse (1938-2018)
Condition: central crease original, accidents and stains on margins
Display: sold unframed
Description
Very large Cobra composition in black and white, from the Chamanes series. A dark mass occupies the left half and opens to a white eye, while a clear, almost vertical fault separates it from a second black block. At the bottom, broad brushstrokes animate the paper. The motif remains at the boundary between mask and totem: this is Lindström's universe, here reduced to black and white.
This lithograph on beautiful BFK Rives paper is unsigned. It comes from the estate of Claude Manesse (1938-2018), the artist's publisher.
I had the opportunity to acquire these proofs kept in the publisher's family. According to my research, this plate, accepted by Lindström, was not later printed in edition. This makes it a special piece, interesting for a collector of the artist.
These black-and-white works are very strong and entirely in keeping with the spirit of the times. It only needs a frame of your choice to showcase them. Framed photos are shown for example only: the lithograph is sold unframed.
Condition: good overall. This large print has always been folded in two along the middle; the central crease is clear, visible on the recto and very marked on the verso. I also note some accidents and a few stains on the margins.
Shipping: will be sent flat, very well protected, and folded in two.
Biography
Bengt Lindström (1925-2008) is one of the great Swedish painters of the 20th century.
Trained in Stockholm, then in Copenhagen and Paris, he joined the Cobra movement and Nordic expressionism. Masks, shamans and mythical figures occupy the heart of his work from the 1960s.
His broad gesture, his exploded faces and his violent color — here absent, in favor of sheer black — have made him a major figure of post-war European art.
