Description from the seller
A striking lacquered wooden Takayama ishô'dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in two sections. Restored, cleaned, and waxed in Japan.
The frame of the cabinet crafted from indigenous hinoki (cypress) wood, whereas the front panels made of precious keyaki (Zelkova – ‘Japanese oak’). Showcasing a beautiful reddish-orange Shunkei lacquer finish. This type of lacquer begins as yellow-orange and matures into a rich red-orange hue over time.
The upper section features a pair of small adjacent drawers and two full-width drawers, while the lower section contains two more full-width drawers. The small drawers are of a ‘panel’-type, a distinctive feature of Takayama cabinets. All drawers run smoothly and provide ample storage space.
Fitted with elegant iron 'hirute'-shape bail handles, paired with square lock plates embellished with heart-shaped cut outs. The sides are equipped with ‘warabite’-shaped totte (handles) for easy transport.
These types of cabinets originate from the mountain town of Takayama in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Period: Japan – Late Meiji period (Early 20th century)

Height 109.5 cm (T 56 cm, B 53.5 cm), Width 97.5 cm, Depth 44 cm
In good condition with some signs of wear in front and left side. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
