Description from the seller

“ Winter landscape with a village, travelers, and a watercourse “

School of Northern Italy, late 17th – first half of the 18th century

Oil on canvas in a frame of the period

Measurements: 115.3 x 85 cm (100 x 69 cm)

Large winter landscape with a scenographic goût, characterized by an articulated mountainous view traversed by a watercourse and animated by architectures, bridges and numerous figures. The composition is dominated by the monumental bare tree in the foreground, a strongly theatrical element that leads the eye toward the village and the snow-covered mountains in the background.

The work appears attributable to the Northern Italian landscape tradition from the late 17th to the early 18th century, into which evident influences from Flemish and Nordic painting converge. In terms of staging, taste for harsh and fantastic nature, and construction of landscape backdrops, comparable references can be made, by way of comparison, to the environments of Veneto-Lombard painting and the figurative culture that developed around Antonio Francesco Peruzzini (1643/46–1724).

Attribution:
School of Northern Italy, late 17th – first half of the 18th century, in the milieu of Veneto-Lombard landscape painters

Condition report;

The canvas has been re-lined and mounted on a later-era frame; it is accompanied by an important gilded wooden frame. The work presents an overall good state of preservation for its age. The surface shows craquelure and normal aging phenomena, with abrasions and localized losses; there are visible some irregularities of the pictorial surface and possible prior conservation interventions.

*** Photo note
The photographic images of the work were taken with the aid of professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better legibility of the composition, details and painting matter. Such lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only.

*** Note on the frame
The frame is attached to the work as a courtesy gift and does not constitute an integral part of the lot nor a determinant element for the economic evaluation of the work. Therefore, any damage, breaks, detachment or deterioration of the frame occurring during transport cannot be the subject of compensation claims or disputes, the sale referring exclusively to the pictorial work.
