Anatre in un paesaggio fluviale, an 18th‑century Italian oil painting attributed to Giovanni Crivelli detto il Crivellino, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
“Anaters in a River Landscape”
Giovanni Crivelli, called Crivellino (Milan ? - Parma 1760) Attributed to
Oil on canvas / 1750-1760
- Dimensions: 69 x 46 cm with a non-coeval frame
Canvas: 59 x 36 cm
The composition depicts a group of ducks arranged along the banks of a water body, set in a complex wooded landscape. In the center, the bird with wings spread introduces an element of movement and constitutes the visual focal point of the scene, while the other animals are captured in more collected and natural poses.
Reason for attribution
The attribution to Giovanni Crivelli, a painter specialized in the representation of animals and particularly appreciated for compositions with birds, appears plausible given the subject matter, scenic setup, and painting language.
Characteristic is the naturalistic interest in the different species and in the plumage, the arrangement of the animals in the foreground in varied poses, the use of a palette dominated by browns, earth tones, ochres and deep greens, and especially the insertion of the animals within a broad and atmospheric landscape, where heavily shaded areas contrast with the bright openings of the horizon.
Of particular significance is the lively rendering of the central duck with wings spread, which turns a seemingly quiet naturalistic scene into a dynamic and theatrical composition, an element coherent with the Lombard animal painting tradition of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries to which Crivelli belongs.
Condition report
The work is presented re-stretched, in good overall conservational condition, compatible with the antiquity of the artifact.
A craquelure and natural settling of the painted surface are observed, with slight inhomogeneities and signs of time. As is frequently the case with paintings of this period, ancient conservation interventions, cleanings, and limited touch-ups are plausible.
*** Photographic note
The photographic images of the work were taken with the aid of professional studio lighting and spotlights, to allow better legibility of the composition, details, and painting matter. Such lighting may determine slight variations in color perception and brightness compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only.
*** Note regarding the frame:
The frame is attached to the work as a kind courtesy gift and without attribution of economic value. Given its antiquity and natural fragility, any damages, detachments, breaks or losses occurring during transport and attributable exclusively to the frame cannot be grounds for refund or compensation.
Ideal for collecting and investment
With certificate of sale and legitimate provenance in accordance with the law - Expertise
