Description from the seller

Italian School of the 19th Century

“Christ on the Way to Calvary and the Veronica Encounter”

Oil on tinplate
19th century
Painting: 84 × 60 cm
With frame: 99.3 × 74.7 cm

Description

Interesting devotional painting from the Italian school of the 19th century, executed in oil on a metal support, depicting an episode of the Way of the Cross: the encounter of Christ with Saint Veronica during the ascent to Calvary.

Christ, crowned with thorns and wrapped in a wide white robe, advances under the weight of the large wooden cross. To his right is depicted Saint Veronica, who shows the veil on which the face of the Redeemer is miraculously imprinted. Behind Christ emerges a third figure, presumably a soldier or an attendant of the procession toward Golgotha.

The composition is built with particular narrative clarity and with a luminous chromatic tone, dominated by a warm golden background, on which the white of Christ’s robe and the reds, greens and pinks of the garments stand out. Of particular interest are the golden halos, defined by thin dark profiles, and the meticulous rendering of faces, hands and draperies.

The deliberately archaizing setting and the frontal presentation of the figures recall models of Italian sacred painting of Renaissance tradition, reinterpreted according to the devotional and historicist taste of the nineteenth century.

Frame

The work is presented within a molded wooden frame, in a nineteenth-century/storicist taste, with a brown-toned finish and dark inner profiles. The frame shows diffuse signs of use, abrasions, small finish losses and wear along the edges and the most exposed elements, consistent with age and use.

On the back are visible the perimeter wooden panel, the support fasteners and the suspension system.

Condition Report

The work presents overall good conservation in relation to its age and the particular nature of the support.

From photographic examination, a widespread and fine superficial craquelure is detectable, particularly legible in the halos and more uniform areas, as well as slight abrasions, small flecks of loss and minute losses of the paint film, mainly near the margins. Some irregularities and superficial marks compatible with the age of the work are present.

The gold areas show physiological crazing and some small localized losses. The back of the tinplate shows a brun- to reddish-bronze patina/protection, with numerous scratches, abrasions, signs of use and areas where the underlying material shows through; along some margins there are also superficial oxidation phenomena.

The frame shows abrasions, scratches, wear and small losses of the finish.

No macroscopic deformations of the support are evident that would compromise legibility of the work. Any restorations, touch-ups or previous conservation interventions cannot be determined with certainty from the photographic examination alone and would require direct observation and, if necessary, UV lamp investigation.

Catalog note: work sold with frame. The metal support and the natural signs of time constitute an integral part of the conservational history of the artifact.

Ideal for collecting and investment

- The included frame is provided with the sale of the work as a courtesy. Any transport damage related solely to the frame cannot be refunded or disputed.

Photographic note: Some images of the work were professionally taken with the aid of artificial lighting (studio spotlight) to highlight more clearly the painterly characteristics, the material, the chromatic tone and the conservation state of the painting. Colors and brightness may therefore vary slightly compared to viewing the work under natural or ambient light.
