Description from the seller
Hannibal Once More
By D. W. Freshfield, London 1914 - rare
Title: Hannibal Once More
Author: Freshfield, Douglas William, 1845-1934.
Publisher: Edward Arnold, London 1914
Soft cardboard cover.
Dimensions: 14 x 22 cm (8vo).
FIRST EDITION 1914. 8vo, about 220 x 140 mm, 9 x 5½ inches, 3 folding maps plus 3 photographic plates, 2 with 2 images, pages: [8], 1-120, followed by 8 pages of advertisements, cover in cardboard perhaps bound at the back, ex libris on front pastedown. Light browning, with small holes only on the last pages of advertisements. The spine has been repaired with adhesive tape and the title has been glued, otherwise a very good copy.
One of the greatest mountaineers of his time, Douglas William Freshfield recounts his journey through the Alps in this historic memoir. Along the way, Freshfield reflects on the legacy of Hannibal and his army, which notoriously crossed the Alps with elephants over 2,000 years ago. The book analyzes the famous crossing of the Alps accomplished by Hannibal in 218 BC during the Second Punic War. The author examines the classical texts of Polybius and Livy and debates the Alpine passes actually traveled by the Carthaginian army (such as Mont Cenis, Col de l’Argentiere, or the passes of the Durance), blending geographical and historical expertise. An important, and rare, document in this original edition, for anyone interested in mountaineering and ancient history.
