Description from the seller
Very beautiful and important bronze animal group with a brown patina representing a family of foxes, a work after the famous French animal sculptor Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879).
The model is known under the title:
« Family of foxes »
and also under the name:
« Vixen and her cubs »
This is a model created in 1847, particularly sought after among Pierre-Jules Mêne’s animal compositions.
The sculpture bears on the base a clearly legible signature and date:
« P.J. MENE. 1847 »
The scene presents a vixen surrounded by several cubs in different poses. The composition is especially lively, with a very beautiful sculptural work on the fur, expressions, paws, ears and the rocky ground.
The quality of the casting is remarkable, with many very fine details and a lovely old brown patina naturally showing lighter nuances on the protruding parts.
The underside of the sculpture shows a hollow casting with traditional internal joints and fixings, compatible with an antique casting.
