Stilleven, an oil on canvas by Antoon Kruysen (1898–1977), from the Netherlands, dating to 1950–1960, hand-signed, in good condition, framed, with canvas size 55 × 40 cm and framed dimensions about 67 × 52 × 4 cm.
Description from the seller
Still life in oil on canvas by Antoon Kruysen (1898–1977), built around a dark bottle, onions and other vegetables, a small box and a terracotta pot. The objects are compactly grouped against a nearly black, brownish-red background. The light labels, the sliced onion and the warm orange-red vegetable tones form strong accents within the predominantly dark palette.
Characteristic is the loose, pronounced brushwork. Especially in the foreground the paint is applied thick and paste-like, with short, lively strokes in which cream, ocher, brown, green and red are placed directly next to and over one another. The forms are not sharply defined, but arise from color and the texture of the paint. Signed bottom right ‘Kruysen’. Canvas dimensions about 55 × 40 cm; framed about 67 × 52 × 4 cm.
Biography of the artist
Antoon Kruysen (Boxtel, 1898 – Chartres, 1977), fully Antonius Petrus Everhardus Kruysen, was a Dutch expressionist painter and the son of painter Jan Kruysen, from whom he received his first lessons. He subsequently studied at the art academy in Rotterdam and studied in Geneva. From the twenties he stayed for a long time in France, where modern French painting formed an important context for his development. After a period in the Netherlands, he settled again in France in 1947; from 1955 he lived in Chartres. Kruysen’s oeuvre includes landscapes, city and village scenes, figure studies, portraits and still lifes. His painting is characterized by spontaneous, expressionist brushwork, strong color contrasts and a highly material treatment of paint. His artistic practice is documented in the Netherlands among others by the Kruysenhuis in Oirschot.
