Description from the seller
Monumental Bronze Sculpture of the Meiji Period: Roaring Tiger
Signed by Master Masaaki 政明 – Japan, 1868-1912, from a private collection.
I present to you a magnificent and rare monumental bronze sculpture depicting a Tiger, a masterpiece of exceptional anatomical realism and expressive power. The work represents a sublime example of Meiji-period Okimono, the golden era of Japanese metallurgy (kōgei), renowned for creating pieces destined for the most prestigious international collections and major World Expos.
The sculpture bears on its belly the incised seal of Master Masaaki 政明. The Masaaki mark identifies works of the highest quality produced from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Artists associated with this name specialized in metal casting and chasing, celebrated for the ability to infuse vital realism and meticulous attention to detail into their creations.
The piece stands out for several elements of excellence: Dynamic Realism: The tiger is captured in a fierce, vibrant pose, with jaws open in a powerful roar and the sinewy musculature taut, ready to spring. Every tendon and muscle is rendered with scientific precision, typical of the Meiji taste that combined traditional Japanese aesthetics with Western realism.
Coat Work: A distinctive feature of Masaaki’s hand is the realistic rendering of the stripes. The contrast between glossy stripes and matte areas is achieved through a refined process of selective polishing and controlled corrosive treatments, faithfully mimicking the texture of fur. Gaze and Presence: The eyes and facial expression give the sculpture a magnetic, dramatic presence, making it a piece of rare vital intensity.
The work is large in size, making it the perfect central piece for a prestigious setting. It is accompanied by its black wooden pedestal, which further enhances its majesty.
The sculpture is in excellent overall condition, with a beautiful natural patina that attests to its originality and period. For utmost professionalism, there is a mark on the lower part of the tail. This detail is visible only when the piece is inverted and does not compromise the aesthetics or structural integrity in any way, but it testifies to its history.
Due to the importance, weight, and rarity of the lot, the packing will be done with appropriate materials and a reinforced structure to guarantee maximum protection. Shipping will be via a well-known international express courier with traceability and full insurance on the winning value.
Why invest in this work?
This sculpture is not just an art object, but a solid investment in high-level Asian art. Masaaki-signed works are globally sought after by collectors for their execution quality. This tiger, by virtue of its monumental dimensions and superb fur work, represents a rare opportunity to acquire a Meiji-era piece of great collectible value.
