Description from the seller

Monumental Bronze Sculpture from the Meiji Period: "The Elegance of the Geisha"
Signed by Master Genryusai Seiya (brand 'Genryůsai Seiya zō' 源龍斎誠谷造) – Japan, 19th Century. Private collection.

An artwork of rarity and extraordinary dimensions. I present an exceptional Meiji-era bronze sculpture depicting a Geisha (Bijin) or musician in ceremonial attire, holding a Shamisen (the traditional three-string instrument). She wears a traditional kimono and the typical geta sandals. With an imposing height surpassing 72 centimeters, this piece sits well beyond the standard productions of the era, configured as a monumental work originally destined for residences of the highest prestige.

Although Genryusai Seiya's workshop is famous for its animal subjects, this female figure belongs to a earlier and rarer production phase, where the mastery of bronze is applied to the grace and complexity of the human form. The detail that immediately captivates the viewer is the electrifying gaze. Thanks to a masterful incision and chasing technique, the eyes seem endowed with hypnotic vitality, a feature that gives the sculpture an almost "alive" and sentient presence.

Seiya's craft explodes in the rendering of the fabrics. The kimono is a masterpiece of meticulous detail, with cold-engraved incisions reproducing the complex silk embroidery, creating a tactile contrast between the glossy parts and those finely worked. The work boasts a deep and layered patina, typical of high-quality bronzes from the early Meiji period. The artist's original signature is incised with calligraphic characters on the bronze base. Height: >72 cm (with a base of about 2). Supplied with a black wooden pedestal that enhances its verticality and dramatic presence. The piece, while maintaining superb aesthetic impact, bears the marks of its long history: for complete professional transparency, note that the sculpture appears to have undergone past localized restoration and consolidation at the neck and feet. Such restorations, performed to preserve the structural integrity over the decades, are visible upon close inspection but do not compromise its incredible beauty or historical-collectible value. It presents a natural patina consistent with the era and minimal signs of time. The spur in the right hand may be missing but it is supplied as photographed.

Given its bulk, weight, and extreme delicacy, logistics will be managed with bespoke standards to protect the monumentality of the bronze. The shipment will be via a well-known international specialized courier with included insurance covering the full auction value.

Acquiring a Genryusai Seiya bronze of this size means obtaining a piece of Japanese art history that rarely appears on the market. The combination of the artist’s signature, the rarity of the subject, and the monumental scale make this Geisha a museum piece, capable of adding prestige to any international collection.
