AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Set of three small antique Japanese lacquer boxes featuring designs of birds, a fantastical figure, and animal motifs – Japan – approx. 1900–1940

Charming set of three small antique Japanese lacquer boxes, probably made between the end of the Meiji era and the beginning of the Shōwa era, around 1900–1940.

The three pieces showcase beautiful lacquer in shades from vermilion red to reddish brown, with a black lacquered interior.

Each box has a different decoration:

– Large square box: particularly graphic design consisting of three small stylized black birds on a vermilion red background.
Dimensions: 4.5 × 9.3 × 9.3 cm.

– Rectangular box: gold decoration depicting a curious character or fantastical animal, accompanied by botanical motifs. An ancient inscription is also visible on the piece.
Dimensions: 2.5 × 9.5 × 6 cm.

– Small rectangular box: delicate polychrome decoration showing two birds in flight under flowering branches, on a red background.
Dimensions: 2 × 4.3 × 6.7 cm.

These small boxes testify to the Japanese taste for refined everyday objects and nature-inspired motifs.

Estimated period: late Meiji – Taishō / early Shōwa, probably around 1900–1940.

Condition: antique condition with significant signs of age and use. Presence of crazing, wear, small chips and lacquer losses, particularly on the edges and some surfaces. The large box also shows visible crazing on the lid. These imperfections are clearly visible in the photographs and form part of the history and character of the objects.

The photographs are an integral part of the description.
