Description from the seller

Julius Schmid (1854–1935) – Portrait of a Young Girl – Former Regional Gallery Liberec Collection

A particularly interesting and charming portrait by the Austrian painter Julius Schmid (1854–1935).
The work depicts a young girl wearing a red ribbon in her hair, portrayed against a deep, dark background. The delicate modelling of the face, subtle skin tones and concentrated expression give the portrait a remarkably intimate and sensitive character.

Julius Schmid was born in Vienna in 1854 and studied for seven years at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 1878 he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, allowing him to continue his studies in Italy. He was also briefly associated with the circle of Hans Makart, one of the leading painters of late 19th-century Vienna. Schmid became known for portraits, figure paintings and historical compositions. His best-known painting is the celebrated Schubertiade (Schubertabend) of 1896.

What makes this particular work especially remarkable is its historical museum provenance.
On the reverse are surviving labels from the:
“Sbírky oblastní galerie Liberec”
Collection of the Regional Gallery Liberec, Czech Republic

The reverse also carries several old inventory and registration numbers, showing that the portrait formed part of an institutional art collection. Such original gallery markings provide an important historical record of the work's provenance.

The reverse additionally bears an old handwritten artist identification. The work is associated with Julius Schmid, whose works are known with both written signatures and JS monograms.
Artist: Julius Schmid
Born/Died: 1854–1935
Nationality: Austrian
Subject: Portrait of a young girl
Dimensions: approx. 19 × 29.5 cm
Period: late 19th / early 20th century
Provenance: formerly in the collection of the Regional Gallery Liberec
Marks: old gallery labels, inventory numbers and artist identification on the reverse
Condition: antique condition with normal traces of age and use. The historic labels and markings on the reverse have been preserved. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.

A particularly special work
This is not simply a decorative antique portrait. The combination of a recognised Viennese academic painter, an exceptionally sensitive child portrait and surviving museum collection labels from Liberec makes this an unusual and historically interesting collector's piece.
The old gallery labels and inventory markings offer the possibility of further provenance research and provide a tangible link to the painting's former institutional history.
A rare opportunity to acquire an intimate portrait by Julius Schmid with an unusually well-preserved historical museum provenance.
