Sold unframed

Rare portrait on paper by Jean-Marie Planque (Tournai 1932 – Brussels 1992), from the artist’s family collection.

The face emerges from an ochre-bronze background, entirely rendered in tight hatching: a few black, soft and angular strokes are enough to fix the gaze, the bridge of the nose and the mouth. The drawing remains open — hair barely indicated, shoulders sketched — in keeping with the graphic manner Planque cultivated in his sheets, where the line synthesizes and analyzes in a single gesture.

The format (49.5 × 34.5 cm) and the medium, between charcoal and warm wash, make it an intimate piece, distinct from his large geometric canvases of the 1980s.

The family stamp affixed on the back confirms its provenance.

Artist’s Biography:
Jean-Marie Planque was born in Tournai in 1932 and died in Brussels in 1992. Painter, pastelist, draftsman, watercolourist and printmaker, he trained at the Tournai Academy with Émile Salkin (1942–1946), at the Paris ABS School (1955–1957), then in Brussels: Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (Jacques Maes), Molenbeek (De Muylder) and the Constant Meunier Academy in Etterbeek (Frans Mabille, 1967–1972), where he obtained the first prize in painting.

He was also an official at the European Commission.
His work moves from figures, portraits and urban views to geometric abstraction built on line.

Close to writer Marcel Moreau, who dedicated a text to him, L’effet Planque. Exhibitions notably at the Auderghem Cultural Center (1972), La Ferme Rose in Uccle (1976), the Maison des Pèlerins of Saint-Gilles (1994), the House of Culture of Tournai (1995), the Mouscron Museum (1999), Lineart Ghent (2000) and the Museo Salvini in Cocquio (2001). Catalogue: A. Nardon, J.M.P. Itinéraire dans une œuvre, BBA Éditions, Brussels, 1994.
