「東海道五拾三次之内 由井之図」
Year: Edo Period 1835–1836
Signed: Sekkō ga 雪江画
The name Sekkō (雪江), in this specific reduced format, indicates the artist who curated and adapted the drawings for one of the famous miniature versions (chūban or kobanzuri format) of Hiroshige’s Tōkaidō series, published around the 1830s. In pocket-sized and reduced editions of the time, publishers and engravers like Sekkō collaborated closely to faithfully reproduce the famous original Hiroshige composition, adapting millimetric details to the much smaller surface of the woodblock.
The original large-format (ōban) Tōkaidō series was published between 1833 and 1834.
However, the specific reduced-format variant, signed or carved by Sekkō, was produced slightly later, around 1835–1836. This period coincides with the great commercial success of the first edition, which led Edo publishers to commission various portable and economical variants for travelers of the time.
Measurements: 8 x 11.5 cm for each individual print.
