Original woodcut by Keisai Eisen (1790–1848) titled Tenmangū 天満宮, circa 1810–1820 (Bunka/Bunsei), depicting Sugawara no Michizane with guardian dogs; image measures 33.5 × 14 cm, Japan, Edo period, in good condition with back paper residue, a stain near the right dignitary and a small loss at the top-right corner.

Original woodcut.
Artist: Keisai Eisen (渓斎 英泉, 1790–1848)
Title: Tenmangū 天満宮 (shinto shrine where Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined)
Year: 1810-20s (Bunka/Bunsei)
The upper cartouche: Bears the inscription from right to left 天満宮 (Tenmangū), indicating the dedication to the shrine and to the deity.
The central figure: Shows the senior official and poet Sugawara no Michizane (845–903), deified after his death under the name Tenjin (the god of protection of studies, literature and learning).
The base: Protected by a pair of mythological guardian dogs (komainu) placed at the sides of a decorative pillar bearing the emblem of the typical publisher of the period.
Condition: on the back: remnants of paper at the top.
It will be packed with extreme care, and with reinforcement.
