Antoni Tàpies’s 1973 colour lithograph Poem from the Catalan series, titled Lithografie - 1973 - Handsigniert & nummeriert - in Swiss hand-made case, is a limited, modern work on Arches paper, hand-signed at the lower right and numbered at the lower left, professionally framed in a Swiss hand-made Plexiglas showcase (76 × 55 cm), originating from Spain and offered in good condition, sold by owner or reseller with the frame included.
Description from the seller
This expressive color lithograph by Antoni Tàpies from 1973 is a characteristic example of the unmistakable visual language of the eminent Spanish artist.
The work is signed in pencil at the bottom right and numbered in pencil at the bottom left.
The color lithograph was printed on high-quality Arches velin paper (Arches wove paper).
About the work:
The composition is dominated by a large, almost rectangular black field. The broad, visibly gestural texture of the color application lends this dark center a almost painterly and material feel. Behind and above it, individual orange areas emerge, creating a tense contrast to the deep black.
Typical of Tàpies, the abstract composition is complemented by fine, handwritten-looking signs, letters, and lines. It is precisely the interaction of a large empty sheet of paper, bold black, few color accents, and enigmatic signs that gives the work its particular tension. Tàpies combines painting and graphic art here, materiality and signs into a strongly reduced, yet highly present composition.
Framing:
The work is professionally and high-quality framed in an exclusive Swiss hand-made Plexiglas showcase.
Plexiglas showcase dimensions: approx. 76 x 55 cm
From the series “Poems from the Catalan,” 1973.
Catalogue raisonné: Galfetti, Mariuccia: Tàpies. Obra gráfica. Graphic Work 1973–1978, Barcelona: Editorial Gustavo Gili, 1980, Cat. No. 379.
About the artist:
Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923–2012) is one of the most important Spanish artists of the postwar period. He developed a unmistakable visual language in which abstraction, materiality, everyday signs, and personal symbolism merge. Crosses, letters, numbers, body fragments, as well as hand and foot imprints repeatedly appear in his works and became characteristic elements of his oeuvre.
In addition to his paintings and famous material works, Tàpies created an extensive graphic print corpus during his career. He explored with great experimentation different techniques, especially lithography and etching, and transferred his distinctive artistic language impressively onto paper.
