**BOSS BF-2 Flanger**
The BF-2 Flanger was introduced in 1980 and became one of BOSS’s longest-running and most recognizable analogue modulation pedals.
This particular example is an early Japanese-made black-label unit with a black screw and ACA power specification.
The pedal uses a classic analogue BBD flanger circuit and is equipped with four controls:
MANUAL
DEPTH
RATE
RES
Its sound ranges from subtle modulation and chorus-like movement to deep metallic flanging and pronounced jet-style sweep effects.
Based on the serial number, internal PCB markings, IC configuration, and component markings, this unit is estimated to belong to approximately the February 1982 production lot.
Because BOSS serial numbers from this period are generally understood as lot-based production codes rather than exact individual manufacturing dates, February 1982 should be regarded as an estimated production lot rather than a precise build date.
**BF-2 Maintenance Details**
The jack contacts were removed and polished to remove oxidation.
Before servicing, the MANUAL and DEPTH potentiometers exhibited slight scratchiness.
For this reason, all potentiometers were serviced.
Oxidation was removed from the wiper areas, the carbon tracks were cleaned with electronic cleaner, and contact conditioner was applied.
After servicing, all controls were checked again and no noticeable scratchiness was present at the time of testing.
Because this is a vintage electronic device, continued completely noise-free operation of the potentiometers cannot be guaranteed. Scratchiness or contact noise may occur in the future due to age, storage, transportation, environmental conditions, or continued use.
The original rubber bushing was missing, so a new replacement rubber bushing has been installed.
The pedal was tested using both an ACA-compatible adapter and a 9V battery and operates properly.
**BF-2 Estimated Production Period**
Estimated production lot: February 1982
Serial number: 153600
The first two digits “15” correspond to approximately February 1982 when interpreted using the commonly referenced BOSS six-digit serial dating method for this period.
**BF-2 Production Dating Evidence**
PCB markings:
BF-2 2291033200
BF-2 / ET-54A / ET5211-510A
Major IC configuration:
JRC 4558D ×2
MN3207 BBD
MN3102 clock driver
TL022CP
78L05AV voltage regulator
This configuration is consistent with the early Japanese BF-2 analogue BBD circuit design.
Several internal components also carry markings consistent with approximately 1981 manufacture, supporting an early-1982 assembly estimate.
Documented examples include:
JRC 4558D marking: 1478
78L05AV marking: 8122
MN3102 marking: 1D
ALPS potentiometers marked 214N
These individual markings do not establish an exact assembly date by themselves, but taken together they support an early-1982 production estimate.
All major electronic components appear original, and no visible signs of electronic component replacement were identified during inspection.
**BOSS OD-2 TURBO OverDrive**
The BOSS OD-2 TURBO OverDrive was introduced as a later development in the lineage of BOSS overdrive pedals.
Unlike many conventional overdrive designs based primarily around an operational-amplifier IC, the OD-2 uses a discrete circuit constructed from individual transistor and FET components.
With TURBO mode switched OFF, the pedal produces a smoother and more traditional overdrive response.
With TURBO mode switched ON, the available gain increases substantially, producing a more aggressive and saturated drive sound.
The dedicated TONE control also provides greater tonal flexibility than the earlier OD-1 design.
Controls:
LEVEL
TONE
DRIVE
TURBO
This particular unit is a black-label Made in Taiwan example with serial number CB08431.
It is an ACA-specification BOSS pedal.
Based on the serial number format, black-label specification, hardware type, and overall component consistency, the pedal is estimated to have been manufactured around early 1990.
The date should be regarded as an estimated production period rather than an exact individual manufacturing date.
**OD-2 Maintenance Details**
The deteriorated rubber bushings have been replaced with new replacement parts.
The original DC jack had developed a failure in its internal switching mechanism, preventing normal battery operation.
The DC jack was therefore replaced with a new compatible part.
After replacement, normal battery operation was fully restored.
The pedal was tested with both a 9V battery and an ACA-compatible power adapter and operates properly.
No noticeable scratchy potentiometers or abnormal switching noise were observed at the time of testing.
As with any vintage electronic device, however, future freedom from scratchiness cannot be guaranteed. Scratchiness or contact noise may occur due to age, storage, transportation, environmental conditions, or continued use.
**OD-2 Estimated Production Period**
Estimated production: early 1990
Serial number: CB08431
Made in Taiwan
The estimate is based on the serial number format together with the black-label specification, hardware type, and overall component consistency.
**Signal Design & Historical Interest**
These two pedals represent distinctly different areas of BOSS analogue effects development.
The BF-2 uses an analogue BBD delay architecture to create its modulation effect.
By continuously varying a delayed signal and combining it with the original signal, the circuit creates the characteristic comb-filtering movement associated with analogue flanging.
The MN3207 BBD and MN3102 clock-driver combination is central to the classic analogue BF-2 design.
The OD-2 approaches signal processing from a different direction.
Its overdrive circuitry is built around discrete transistor and FET stages rather than a conventional main op-amp clipping architecture.
This design gives the OD-2 its distinctive response and allows the TURBO circuit to provide a noticeably more aggressive gain structure when engaged.
Together, the two pedals illustrate two different approaches to analogue signal processing used by BOSS during the 1980s and early 1990s:
Analogue BBD time-based modulation in the BF-2
Discrete transistor/FET overdrive in the OD-2
**Production Background & Historical Context**
BOSS introduced its compact pedal format in the late 1970s and rapidly established one of the most recognizable effects-pedal platforms in the world.
The early Made in Japan period is particularly associated with the development of many analogue circuits that later became long-running standards within the BOSS catalogue.
The BF-2 Flanger was introduced in June 1980 during this period.
Its combination of four practical controls, robust construction, and a fully analogue BBD-based signal path allowed players to obtain a broad range of modulation sounds in a compact format.
From subtle movement to dramatic jet-style flanging, the BF-2 became one of BOSS’s most enduring modulation designs.
This example, estimated from approximately February 1982, belongs to the relatively early Japanese black-label production period.
Its internal components, including the MN3207 BBD, MN3102 clock driver, JRC operational amplifiers, and period component markings, are consistent with this early production era.
The OD-2 TURBO OverDrive represents a later stage of BOSS development.
Introduced in the mid-1980s, the OD-2 expanded the company’s overdrive concept with a dedicated TURBO mode and TONE control.
Its discrete circuit architecture distinguishes it from many overdrive pedals built around conventional operational-amplifier clipping arrangements.
By approximately 1990, BOSS production was increasingly shifting toward Taiwan.
The OD-2 offered here is a black-label Made in Taiwan example estimated from around this transitional period.
This makes the pair particularly interesting from a historical perspective.
The BF-2 represents early-1980s Made in Japan analogue production, while the OD-2 represents approximately eight years of subsequent development and the transition into Taiwanese manufacturing.
Although they were designed for completely different effects—flanging and overdrive—both demonstrate the practical engineering, durable enclosure design, and stage-oriented functionality that helped establish BOSS compact pedals as an industry standard.
For players, the set offers two very different classic analogue sounds.
For collectors, it provides an interesting pairing of two production eras within the history of BOSS compact effects.

If the refusal, non-delivery, return, or delivery failure was caused by an error or omission on the seller’s side, the matter will likewise be handled in accordance with Catawiki’s applicable policies and procedures.
By placing a bid, the buyer agrees to check and comply with all applicable import regulations, customs requirements, taxes, duties, and fees in their country.
The seller cannot be held responsible for customs delays, import refusals, additional charges, or delivery problems resulting from local regulations or circumstances beyond the seller’s reasonable control, subject to Catawiki’s applicable policies and applicable law.
Orders may be cancelled if an appropriate shipping service is unavailable or if shipping or import conditions cannot be met, subject to Catawiki’s applicable policies and procedures.
We do not ship to P.O. BOX, APO, or FPO addresses.
