- Italian school, Lombard area

Ceiling decorative board with a peacock
Italian manufacture,
Painting technique on a wooden panel
57.5 × 22 cm
Wooden decorative element of rectangular shape, presumably originally belonging to a painted ceiling or to a wooden decorative apparatus, depicting a profile peacock within a simple painted frame. The animal, rendered with vividly ornamental taste, features rich plumage in shades of turquoise, red and ivory and is accompanied by delicate vegetal and floral tracery on an ochre background.
The surface shows a marked old patina, with craquelure, abrasions, losses and wear of the paint, fissures and irregularities of the wood. The ensemble preserves a suggestive antique and popular character.
Lombard/Emilian panel from a 15th-16th century ceiling
- These decorative tablets (formelle) are a rare example of Renaissance ceilings preserved over time, often completed by readable portions of wall friezes. The panels were joined with interlocking joints in the ceilings of 15th-century rooms in noble palaces and historic residences. These panels with their rediscovered decorations contribute to revealing the deeper part of a rare Italian craft.
Formelle of this type are exhibited at the Civic Museum Ala Ponzone in Cremona and at the Civic Museum of Crema.
*** Note on conservation status:
The work shows conservation and painting interventions carried out in different periods, evidence of its material history and the successive maintenance campaigns over time. Repaintings, color retouches and additional painting have been found, including some relatively recent ones, carried out for both conservation purposes and to restore the unit aesthetically and stylistically. These interventions must therefore be considered part of the complex conservation history of the panel, which nevertheless retains legible its iconographic and decorative layout.
Artistic merit: Good level of craftsmanship with iconographic interest in apotropaic-symbolic terms
Historical importance: Testimony of Renaissance/late Gothic architectural refinement, worthy of preservation
Painting technique: Multicolor decoration: protein-based tempera/mineral pigments and natural earths on plaster preparation or light imprimatura
Surface finish: Possible traces of ancient varnish or oil-resin protective layer (oxidized over time)
Main decorative technique: Painting with relief details emphasized by contrasting color fields
The panel originates from a Lombard/Emilian ceiling. Medieval/gothic-type painting with conservation restorations. Over the centuries the panel has undergone repaintings and restorations for conservation purposes. As an object from a bygone era, it shows signs of time, flaws, and gaps that make it a fundamental and unique feature.
*** Photography note: The images were taken, in part, with studio artificial lighting to enhance and make the details of the work more readable. The color perception in real life may be slightly different, with a panel potentially darker or characterized by slight tonal variations compared to what is visible in the photographs.
