TITLE:
Set of 3 Japanese bronze mirrors with cast decoration and inscriptions (Tenkaichi) #C136
Overview
• Object: Three rectangular Japanese bronze mirrors (without handles)
• Material: Bronze
• Inscriptions: Each mirror carries a cast inscription along one edge. As read from the cast characters: Tenkaichi (天下一) with the names Fujiwara Ieshige (藤原家重) and Tsuda Satsuma no kami (津田薩摩守). See the close-up photos.
• Origin: Japan
A set of three Japanese cast bronze mirrors. The large mirror is decorated in relief with folding fans, pine, plum blossoms, a turtle (minogame) and two cranes, all traditional symbols of long life. The two smaller mirrors each carry two large raised characters, Takasago (高砂) on one and Kotobuki-kame (寿亀) with pine and bamboo on the other. Each mirror has two small studs on the decorated side. The reverse sides are the plain polished mirror faces.
The age has not been determined and the inscriptions have not been verified by a specialist. Signed mirrors of this type are generally associated with the Edo period, but please judge from the photos.
Condition
• Decorated sides: relief decoration and inscriptions are clear; patina, discolouration and surface wear consistent with age
• Mirror faces: tarnished and clouded with scratches and stains; they no longer reflect clearly
• No cracks or breaks noticed (see photos)
Size (approximate)
• Large mirror: 18 x 85 cm
• Two small mirrors: 10.5 x 6.0 cm each
