Description from the seller
LAZZARO PASINI
(Reggio nell’Emilia, 28 September 1861 – Milan, 29 April 1949)
“ Mountain Landscape .” (1880/1890)
Late 19th century
Technique: oil on cardboard
Estimate: €400.00 / €500.00
Dimensions of the work: 28 × 36 cm
Dimensions with frame: about 44 × 52 cm
Signature: signed at the bottom right; the inscription is currently barely legible to the naked eye due to the attenuation of the painting material and the surface, but becomes more appreciable upon close observation with a magnifying glass.
Frame: contemporaneous or at least ancient gilded wood frame, with a metal plaque bearing the inscription “PASINI.”
Description of the work
The painting depicts a wide mountain landscape, built through a succession of natural vistas that guide the eye from the foreground to the snow-covered massif closing the composition in the background.
The view is characterized by a deliberately restrained palette, dominated by greens, browns, grays and muted blues. The lateral mountain masses frame the central valley, while the snow-capped peaks, bathed in brighter light, constitute the main visual focal point. The sky, clear and bright, creates a delicate contrast with the deeper tones of the vegetation and the foreground reliefs.
The painting presents a naturalistic and atmospheric approach: rather than a minute description of individual elements, the emphasis seems to be on portraying depth, distance, and the changing lights of the alpine environment. The brushwork appears synthetic and calibrated, particularly effective in the progressive fading of chromatic values toward the horizon.
Historical-artistic framing
The work can be placed at the end of the 19th century, within the landscape production of Lazzaro Pasini, an Emilia-based painter active mainly during the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth.
The choice of a small format and cardboard support is particularly suited to direct observational painting and study, in which the natural data is conveyed through relatively free brushwork and a particular attention to atmospheric phenomena.
In this painting the relation between the darkest, closest part of the valley and the cold brightness of the snow-covered mountains takes on particular prominence, a device that significantly enhances the depth of the view.
Condition report
The work appears overall in decent conservation condition compatible with its age. The painting surface shows superficial deposits, general opacity and some uneven varnish, particularly evident in close-up photographs and under direct lighting. Minute abrasions and normal surface wear are also observable.
The texture and consistency of the support are clearly perceptible in macro photographs. The signature at the bottom right is heavily attenuated but still identifiable upon close inspection.
The frame shows widespread abrasions, wear and small losses of the gilded finish, consistent with its age and use of the overall piece. A light conservative cleaning of the surface by a qualified restorer is recommended, which could also improve the overall readability of the painting and the signature.
*** Photographic note
The photographs of the work were taken with the aid of professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better readability of the composition, details and painting matter. This lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared to viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only.
The frame is supplied free of charge as a gift with the work and must therefore be considered an accessory element, not included in the monetary evaluation of the painting. Because antique gilded frames are naturally fragile, any damage, detachment, breakage or loss of parts of the frame occurring during transport or shipping cannot be the subject of reimbursement, compensation, or dispute concerning the value of the work. The packing will nonetheless be prepared with the utmost care to ensure, as far as possible, a safe transport.
