Description from the seller
A vintage multifunction lighter for pipe smokers (Lighter & Pipe Tool Combination), featuring an elegant, compact "pen-style" design characteristic of the 1960s and 1970s.
Design and Construction
Materials: Sturdy outer body made of satin-finish aluminum (matte silver), complemented by gold-plated mechanical elements and a pocket clip.
• Portability: Thanks to its elongated shape and external clip, the object perfectly mimics a luxury writing instrument, designed to be carried discreetly in a jacket pocket.
Components and Functionality
The object cleverly integrates three essential functions into a single cylindrical body:
1. Pipe Lighter: The ignition mechanism is located at the top end, featuring a specially designed concave nozzle to direct the flame and protect the pipe bowl. Ignition is achieved in the classic manner via a spark generated by a serrated wheel and flint.
2. Actuation System: Two directional arrows are stamped on the casing. These indicate the sliding motion required to open and activate the internal gas release valve. Also located on the body is a transverse brass regulator for adjusting flame intensity (+ / -).
Pipe Pick: Concealed entirely within the casing is a long, slender brass tool attached to the bottom cap. It is removed by unscrewing or pulling and is used to clear away ash and soot, as well as to remove deposits from the pipe bowl.
Filling Mechanism and Interior
Viewed from below (after detaching the cleaning tool), the interior reveals a two-compartment configuration:
• A deep main channel into which the pick tool slides.
• A brass filling valve with a central pin, designed for standard butane gas refills.
Technical Condition and Important Notes
Mechanical: The item can be fully disassembled, allowing easy access to the flint chamber and internal components.
• Gas system: The unit has not been tested with gas. Given the item's age (over 50 years), the internal rubber seals (O-rings) are very likely aged, dried out, or compressed; they may require replacement to ensure a perfect seal and prevent pressure loss during refilling.
A rare collector's piece (tobacciana), notable for its compact engineering and dual functionality tailored to the pipe-smoking ritual. Please examine the listing carefully before bidding!
