Willem Janssen (born 1950) titled Chateau Neercanne met uitzicht op grenskantoor, an oil painting in the Impressionist landscape style from 1988, measuring 96 × 116 cm and framed to about 108 × 128 × 7 cm, hand-signed, original edition, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Chateau Neercanne with a view of Willem Janssen’s border office (Stein, 1950), signed and dated bottom right ‘Willem Janssen 88’. The canvas measures approximately 96 × 116 cm and is framed to approximately 108 × 128 × 7 cm. On the reverse there is a label from Rive Gauche in Maastricht and an inventory label from the Rabobank collection.
Janssen builds the landscape from a high vantage point, with a strong diagonal movement from the dark, densely wooded foreground to the buildings and the open landscape on the right. Vertical tree trunks contrast with the slanted terrain lines and guide the eye to the houses further away and the edge of the forest. The palette is dominated by turquoise, blue-green, and fresh foliage green, supplemented with ocher, pink, and muted reddish-brown accents. The loose, broad brushwork and locally sketchy treatment give the landscape a strongly painterly character, where atmospheric color and rhythm are more important than precise detailing.
Biography of the artist
Willem Janssen was born in 1950 in Stein and studied from 1973 to 1975 at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. In the period after his training, landscape became an important subject within his painting. After moving to North Limburg, he devoted himself for a while more to drawing, after which nature again took a central place in his work. His oeuvre includes paintings and drawings and developed from landscape depictions to a broader figurative-expressive visual language, in which besides nature human and animal figures also appear. Janssen also works spatially; in his later work he creates painted wooden sculptures, among other things. The Limburg landscape and the immediate natural environment form a recurring starting point within his oeuvre.
