Description from the seller
In this four-panel drawing, Melle de Boer plays with humor and a light, slightly absurdist touch on the image of Superman, the archetype of the strong and invulnerable hero. The muscular figure is distorted, gets a huge belly, suddenly sits on a chair with a comic image as its head, and even appears as an almost angelic, floating figure. Speech bubbles and references to comics and literature reinforce the character of a visual narrative. The combination of loose drawing lines, bold colors, and collage gives the work a spontaneous and unguarded feel, while behind the humor there is also melancholy and vulnerability. That interplay of popular culture, wordplay, dark humor, and a certain wistfulness is characteristic of De Boer’s figurative drawings and collages. Michiel Simon
