Petgat - Scherpenzeel - Friesland I is an original impressionist oil painting from 1967, depicting a landscape in green, blue, white and grey tones, hand-signed, in reasonable condition, 90 x 120 cm framed as 95 x 125 cm, sold with frame by Galerie.
Description from the seller
In this tranquil landscape, Herman Buijtenhuijs mainly captures the space, the light and the atmosphere of the Dutch polder. The low, watery landscape with reeds, water lilies and a few trees is dominated by an impressive cloudscape, which occupies almost two thirds of the canvas. With loose, visible brushstrokes and an understated palette of greens, grays and blues, Buijtenhuijs convincingly renders the changing Dutch weather. The reflections in the water connect sky and landscape and reinforce the sense of openness and calm. The painting clearly aligns with his impressionist way of working, where not every detail is elaborated, but above all the experience of the landscape at a given moment is captured. Buijtenhuijs preferred to paint his landscapes on location and regarded the ever-changing cloud skies of the North Netherlands as an important source of inspiration.
Herman Willem Buijtenhuijs (1944–2010) was a Dutch painter, born in Overveen. He studied in 1966 at the Art Students League in New York and then from 1967 to 1971 at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. In 1974 he moved to Friesland, attracted by the wide landscape and the uninterrupted horizon. Later he lived and worked for about ten years on Ameland, an island with which he became strongly connected and which he painted hundreds of times. Buijtenhuijs saw himself as related to the impressionists and worked much en plein air: outdoors, directly in front of the subject. His landscapes are characterized by broad skies, a low horizon, natural light and a loose brushwork. Therefore his paintings are not only registrations of a place, but especially atmospheric impressions of the Dutch coastal and polder landscape.
