Jeroen Molenaar, Cancun airport, a 2009 C‑print in Kunstfotografie, hand-signed and sold by Galerie, measuring 75 × 50 cm.
Description from the seller
In this work, on the back labeled Cancun Airport, Jeroen Molenaar directs his gaze to the seemingly everyday markings of an airport tarmac. The yellow, black, and dark red lines, sections, numbers, and letters change through the chosen crop into an almost abstract pattern. The strong perspective draws the eye deep into the image, while the small traffic cone and the dark object on the left emphasize the enormous scale of the empty ground. Notable is the tension between the tight, functional markings and the weathered surface full of smudges, tire marks, and discolorations. Thus a purely functional environment becomes a graphic composition in which space, perspective, rhythm, and line play are central – themes closely connected to Molenaar’s broader oeuvre.
Jeroen Molenaar (Zwolle, 1979) is a Dutch visual artist who studied at ArtEZ-CABK in Kampen from 2000 to 2004. In his work he mainly explores space, architecture, and perspective. He often starts from elements from the urban or rural environment – lines, constructions, and spatial structures – which he abstracts and distorts. Because of that what is initially recognizable, such as in Cancun Airport the markings on an airport, can transform into a play of geometry and depth. In addition to photography, Molenaar creates paintings and spatial objects; in those as well he uses shifting lines and perspectival distortions to mislead the viewer’s perception. His fascination with architecture and the way individual components together form a spatial construct runs as a red thread through his oeuvre.
