AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

This compact landscape by Charles Dankmeijer (1861–1923) is executed in oil on panel and shows a low, open landscape beneath a distinctly agitated cloud-filled sky. The composition is strongly simplified: a dark horizon with clumps of trees and vegetation separates the ocher-brown foreground from a sky that dominates almost the entire image plane.

Dankmeijer here works with a powerful, paste-like brushwork. Broad and clearly visible brushstrokes in ocher yellow, brown and green-blue run in various directions, giving the sky in particular a dynamic, almost expressionistic effect. Dark brown areas along the horizon provide a strong tonal contrast and anchor the composition. In the lower left, the work is signed C.B. Dankmeijer.

Dimensions of the work: 14 × 25 cm.
Dimensions with frame: 27 × 37 cm.
Provenance: private collection, F. de V., Eindhoven.

Artist biography
Carel Bernardus ‘Charles’ Dankmeijer (Amsterdam, 1861–1923) was a Dutch painter, draftsman and etcher, best known for his landscapes. He studied at the academy in Antwerp and then at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. After his training he worked in the likes of Laren, The Hague, Renkum and Oosterbeek. His landscapes are regularly characterized by a spontaneous, dynamic painting style and a pronounced use of color. Getty

Dankmeijer’s oeuvre includes landscapes, river scenes, city and village views and marine subjects. Works by him are in public Dutch collections; the Rijksmuseum lists, among others, his Gracht with ships. Several of his landscapes are also included in the former collection of the Instituut Collectie Nederland. In 2002, at Kasteel Doorwerth, a retrospective exhibition devoted to his work was held, accompanied by a monographic publication.
