Description from the seller

Henri Matisse.
Title “Portrait of Lydia Delectorskaya, 1942”.

Signed and dated in the plate.

Matisse signed this work in the bottom right with his characteristic signature and the year '42', a period in which he, despite the war and personal illness, underwent a huge creative renewal.

Authorized color offset lithograph, produced premium matte (non-reflective) and with high color intensity.

Condition: the work is in excellent condition.

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French painter, recognized as one of the great artists of the 20th century alongside Pablo Picasso. Born in Cateau-Cambrésis, Matisse began painting during a recovery period in 1890 and decided to become an artist, despite his parents’ opposition. He studied at the Julian School and the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he took lessons from the symbolist painter Gustave Moreau.

Matisse is known for his innovative use of color and form in his paintings, sculptures, and drawings. He was one of the leaders of the Fauvist movement, characterized by the use of pure colors and a portrayal of the intensity of emotions. His work is based on simplification, stylization, and synthesis.

Regarding the valuation of his works, purchase prices range from 150,000 to 300,000 euros for an early Fauvism painting by Matisse, while Fauvist canvases and Orientalist portraits from the twenties and thirties reach prices between 1 and 5 million euros.

This iconic portrait is a wonderful example of Henri Matisse’s work, one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The painting, completed in 1942, shows Lydia Delectorskaya, who was Matisse’s muse, assistant, and model for many years.

Matisse is known for his ability to achieve enormous expressiveness with minimal lines and bold colors. In this particular work you can see several characteristic elements of his later style.

The face is divided into a blue and a yellow half. This is not a realistic rendering of shadow, but a way to create depth and emotion through color contrast.
The thick black outline of the face and hair gives the work a nearly graphic, modern character.
The green background (the hair) contrasts sharply with the orange-brown color of the wall, drawing immediate attention to the face.

Lydia played a crucial role in Matisse’s life, especially in his later years when his health declined.

Never framed and kept in a dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper.
The shown photos are part of the description.

This artwork is carefully securely packaged and shipped in protective acid-free paper.
No shipping available to the Canary Islands.
