Georgios Derpapas (1937–2014)

"Cockfight".
Etching on heavy handmade paper, 1962.
Dimensions: 30.5 x 43.1 cm.
Hand-signed and dated in pencil.

Recognized as one of the leading figures of Surrealism in Greece. His compositions reflect the direct influence of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and—most notably from 1965 onwards—of masters such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Max Ernst. He masterfully combined elements of ancient Greek civilization and Byzantine art with imaginary, dreamlike landscapes.
