Corteo di caccia in paesaggio con città fortificata - NO RESERVE, oil on panel by an Italian 19th‑century school painter, with a gold wooden frame.
Description from the seller
Italian School of the 19th century
Oil and tempera on panel
Period: 1800/1850
Dimensions: 54 x 26.5 cm in frame
Panel: 50 x 20.5 cm
“Hunting procession in a landscape with a fortified city
From a model of Central Italian painting of the 15th century”
Era: 19th century, presumably 1800/1850
Technique: tempera and/or oil on wooden panel
Topic: hunting scene with a knight, falconer, servants and greyhounds
Field: Italian, Neo-Gothic/Neorenaissance taste
Frame: gilded wooden frame, of a later or contemporaneous period
The expansive composition depicts an aristocratic hunting procession set in an idealized landscape. In the center dominates the knight on an elegant, richly barded steed, accompanied by a young man with a falcon and a servant with a greyhound; on the right, other hunting dogs pursue the prey. In the background a fanciful walled city unfolds, with churches, towers, and architectures clearly derived from medieval and Renaissance sources.
The work deliberately revisits the language of profane 15th-century Italian painting, with references to the decorations of wedding cassoni (chests) and to courteous and venatorial scenes of central Italy: clear profiles, still-intuitive perspective, figures arranged in paratactical sequence, rich trappings and vegetation described in a decorative manner. The result is a suggestive nineteenth-century interpretation of the figurative culture of the quattrocento.
Condition report: the panel is overall in discrete condition for its age. There are signs of surface wear and abrasions, color alterations and inhomogeneities, surface deposits and possible prior painting/restorations. On the reverse, there are stains, signs of use and old fixing elements. The gilded frame shows widespread wear, abrasions and small losses.
*** The work is exceptionally presented without reserve price ***
*** Photographic note
The photographs of the work were taken with studio professional lighting and spotlights to allow better legibility of the composition, details and painting material. This lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared to viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only.
*** Note regarding the frame:
