Two-panel Edo-period Japanese teaceremony folding screen with a palm and thatched fence motif, 64.4 cm high by 184 cm wide, lacquered black frame with a silk brocade border, original/official and in excellent condition with minor gofun losses and a certificate of authenticity included.
Description from the seller
An exquisite two-panel teaceremony screen 風炉先屏風 (furosaki’byôbu) depicting a thatched twig fence sweeping across a gold-leaf ground.
The bundled twigs are built up in relief with shell-white pigment 胡粉 (gofun) and finished in gold leaf. Dark, palm-like leaves emerge between them, while irregular gold-leaf clouds enrich the background.
A patterned brocade silk border surrounds the composition, enclosed by a black-lacquered frame.
The composition dates from the 17th or 18th century and was later mounted as the present two-panel screen.
Period: Japan – Edo period (17th–18th century); later mounted as this 2-panel screen.
Dimensions: Height 64.4 cm; width 184 cm (2 x 92 cm).
Considering its age, in very good restored condition, with minor losses to the gofun relief and signs of age and use on both sides. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be displayed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
