Original Japanese six-panel folding screen from the late Edo period, 182.4 cm high and 376 cm wide, with cranes on a gold leaf ground, bordered by silk and set in a black lacquered frame with gilt fittings; very good condition with age-related signs and a certificate of authenticity included on shipment.
Description from the seller
A superb tall six-panel folding screen 屏風 (byôbu) depicting cranes 鶴 (tsuru) in a variety of poses against a gold-leaf ground.
The gathering includes red-crowned cranes 丹頂鶴 (tanchôzuru) and white-naped cranes 真鶴 (manazuru). Some stand with their necks extended, while others preen, bow or spread their wings. Their finely painted white, grey and black plumage, bright red crowns and slender legs stand out against the open gold background.
The painting is executed in pigments and ink on gold leaf. It is surrounded by two patterned silk borders and set within a black-lacquered frame with gilt metal fittings.
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (first half of the 19th century).
Dimensions: Height 182.4 cm; total width 376 cm (2 x 64 cm and 4 x 62 cm).
Considering its age, the screen is in very good condition, with signs of age on both sides, some small touch-ups to the gold leaf and some re-papering to the reverse. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be displayed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
