Info about the artist: Karin Kneffel
Biography:
Born 1957 in Marl. After studies in German studies and philosophy. 1981-1987 studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Johannes Brus, Norbert Tadeusz and Gerhard Richter. 1984/85 Fellowship at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. 1991 Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Stipendium. 1995/96 Villa Massimo, Rome. 1998 Visiting professorship at the Hochschule für Künste, Bremen. 2000 Visiting professorship in Reykjavik. 2000-08 Professorship at the Hochschule für Künste, Bremen. Since 2008 Professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Munich.
Work:
The master pupil of Gerhard Richter presents with her art, similar to Pasieka, an epic understanding of painting. In her masterful interiors, for example, animals—primarily dogs—but also fruit and artifacts on splendid carpets can be seen. It is part of the fascination of these works to witness the painter’s technical prowess up close.
In all her works the objects are astonishingly realistic and precise. The common thread is a restrained presentation that initially creates an intimate relationship between the basic elements observed by the artist, but at the same time generates distance from the viewer; thus it raises the question of the artistically “renderable”.
