About
Jaroslav Rössler (1902–1990) was a Czech photographer and one of the leading figures of Czech avant-garde photography in the 20th century. As a youth he already worked in the Prague studio of the renowned photographer František Drtikol. In the 1920s Rössler belonged to the influential artist group Devětsil and developed an experimental visual language between Constructivism, Abstraction and New Photography.
Characteristic of Rössler's work are geometric compositions of light and shadow, photomontages, as well as experimental techniques such as solarization, negative printing, multiple exposure and shots with prisms. His unusually early abstract photographs place him, in art history, alongside Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy. Today Jaroslav Rössler is regarded as an important pioneer of modern European photography and as a central figure of the Czech photo avant-garde.
