Description from the seller

Francis Bacon (1909-1992)
Étude for a Corrida, after Study for Bullfight No. 1 (Sabatier 10)
Exemplaar 99/250

Francis Bacon is one of the most important British artists of the 20th century. His painting revolves around distorted human figures, isolated bodies and the tension between figuration and abstraction. He drew inspiration from old masters, photography, film and literature, and created therefrom a personal, often confronting visual language.

About the work:
With his bullfighting scenes, Bacon returned to a theme that fascinated him his entire life: the arena as a theater of violence, tension and surrender. For him, the corrida was not a folkloric scene, but a raw spectacle in which man and beast physically merge. This is evident in this image as well. The torero and the bull melt together into one tumultuous, almost unreadable mass of flesh, shadow and movement, in the middle of an oval sand arena.

The composition plays with strong contrasts. Against a flat, fiery orange background and a bright pink band stand the earthy, dark tones of the sand and the bodies. On the right, gray-blue, blotchy areas open up, suggesting the audience in the stands, with the round number 4 as a strange, almost clinical detail. Thus arises the characteristic Bacon tension between a stylized, almost graphic space and the raw, painted energy of the figures.

About this edition:
This stone-signed lithograph is printed on handmade Privilege Cotton paper, in a limited edition of 250 copies. The work is numbered in pencil, bears the embossing of The Shakespeare Arts, and is supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
