Description from the seller
Art Gallery, the sole original album released by The Artwoods during the band's lifetime, stands as one of the most sought-after British R&B albums of the mid-1960s. This 1966 Decca pressing ranks among the true rarities of the period, with genuine copies exceptionally difficult to encounter today.
The group's line-up was extraordinary: vocalist Art Wood, elder brother of Ronnie Wood, alongside a young Jon Lord several years before he became a founding member of Deep Purple, guitarist Derek Griffiths, bassist Malcolm Pool and drummer Keef Hartley. Musically, The Artwoods stood apart from many British R&B contemporaries. Jon Lord's prominent Hammond organ gives the record a distinctive mixture of rhythm & blues, soul and jazz, with superb interpretations of material associated with Allen Toussaint, Eddie Floyd, Solomon Burke and the Stax sound. Despite the band's formidable reputation on the London club circuit, the album sold only modestly when originally released, making copies from 1966 exceptionally scarce. This is a highly desirable piece of British Mod and R&B history, with important connections to both Deep Purple and the wider British rock scene of the 1960s. Of further note is the very low stamper code: 1B represents the earliest possible stamper in Decca's Buckingham system, adding technical rarity to an already collectible title.
⸻
Sleeve (VG+):
A very nice clean copy with excellent condition overall. The front and back covers remain well preserved with only minimal handling wear. There is a small sticker on the back, but otherwise the sleeve presents cleanly and strongly, grading VG+.
Inner Sleeve:
Original inner sleeve included.
Vinyl (VG):
The vinyl shows some playwear with light hairlines visible under heavy lighting, though nothing feelable or worrying. There is a very tiny edge warp present, which does not cause any effect on playback whatsoever but is noted for completeness. Overall grading VG.
NOTE - Lower Than Average Reserve Price on this Lot due to this Small non audible warp on the vinyl causing lesser conditions.
