Title: *Young Woman, Dressed in Yellow*
Year of origin: 1970
Technique: Pastel on paper
Dimensions:** 82 × 53 cm
Signature: right in the image “Gráber”
Framing: framed
Provenance: Hungarian art dealership / Haas Galéria, Budapest; subsequently private ownership
Certificate of authenticity: Certificate from Haas Galéria, Budapest, dated 22 March 2016
The large pastel shows a young, seated woman in a yellow dress. The frontal figure is defined by a powerful, expressive line work. Dark drawn contours engage in a tense dialogue with the restrained yellows, greens, grays, and pinks of the dress and background.
Particularly impressive is the psychological presence of the depicted. The lowered gaze and calm seating give the portrait an introspective, almost melancholic mood. The free, gestural execution combines drawing precision with a painterly treatment of color and surface.
The work is signed in the upper right and has been documented by the renowned Haas Galéria in Budapest. The certificate accompanying the piece confirms title, year of creation, technique, dimensions and signature. The Haas Galéria explicitly states in this certificate that it assumes responsibility for the originality of the work.
Margit Gráber is among the established representatives of 20th-century Hungarian art. Her work encompasses painting and graphic art and is closely connected with the development of Hungarian modernism as well as the artist traditions of Kecskemét, Nagybánya and Szentendre.
The work offered here is distinguished by its large format of 82 × 53 cm, the developed figurative motif, and its documented provenance.
Condition: good age-appropriate condition. Frame with signs of aging. The exact condition can be seen in the photographs.
The original certificate from Haas Galéria will be delivered together with the work.
