Description from the seller
Jacopo Mattia Alegiani (THE JA) — Walls, 1997
Acrylic paint, expanded acrylic paste and spray paint on canvas. Hand-signed by the artist.
Dimensions:
• Canvas: 50 × 50 cm
• Including frame: 53 × 53 × 5 cm
The artwork is stretched on a wooden support and presented in a black wooden frame, ready to hang.
Part of the Walls series, this work explores the relationship between material, colour and light. Layers of textured paste create a sculptural surface, where raised edges and recessed areas produce shifting highlights and shadows. Shades of grey, white, mauve, red and ochre reveal the work’s layered composition.
Dated 1997, the painting belongs to the artist’s transition from graffiti to canvas, bringing the textures and visual language of urban walls into his studio practice. Its compact, square format invites close observation of the surface.
About the artist
Jacopo Mattia Alegiani, known as THE JA, began his artistic practice in the graffiti scene during the mid-1980s. His subsequent experimentation developed into a material-based approach to painting, focused on surface, light and visual perception.
