Sol LeWitt, screen print - special edition - signed - 1986, high-quality framed, in good condition, 53 × 53 cm, Netherlands.
Description from the seller
This unique silkscreen by Sol LeWitt from 1986 belongs to the series “Five Geometric Figures in Five Colors,” in which the American Conceptual artist explored the interaction of geometric forms and different color variations.
Signed in pencil at the bottom right.
About the work:
The work is documented in the Sol LeWitt Prints Catalogue Raisonné under the number 1986.06, Plate #03.
A feature of this series lies in its exceptional edition structure. As described in the Sol LeWitt Prints Catalogue Raisonné:
150 sets were color-prints. These sets are unique in their combination (some sets of five works contain more than one form in the same color). None of these sets was numbered, as they are all unique.
At the center of the composition is a pink trapezoid. The restrained color scheme in a soft pink shade creates an appealing contrast to the white paper ground. Through the clear line work and the deliberate absence of decorative elements, a calm, balanced visual effect emerges.
It is precisely in this apparent simplicity that LeWitt’s artistic principle becomes evident: not the spontaneous gesture, but a pre-established idea determines the appearance of the artwork. The geometric figure is reduced to its essential properties and thereby gains its own distinct visual presence.
Publisher: Bébert, Rotterdam
Print: Ger Stahlhofer (Suzo), Rotterdam
Framing:
The silkscreen is mounted in a floating manner and presented in a black wooden frame with a double mat. The special mounting makes the sheet appear visually free within the frame and emphasizes the clear geometric design. The glazing consists of high-quality Plexiglas Optical HC, offering UV protection, scratch resistance and low light reflection.
Frame size: approx. 53 × 53 cm.
About the artist:
Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) is one of the pioneering figures of American art in the 20th century and is considered one of the most important representatives of Conceptual Art and Minimal Art. Since the 1960s, he developed an independent pictorial language based on geometric basic forms, mathematical orders, and systematic variations.
For LeWitt, the artistic idea was paramount. His famous wall drawings, three-dimensional structures, and graphic editions show how a virtually unlimited variety of forms and color configurations can arise from simple rules.
His works are internationally recognized and represented in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Tate in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
