Morgner is considered the leading figure of Westphalian Expressionism and one of the boldest talents of the early 20th-century German avant-garde. He exhibited with key Expressionist collectives, such as the New Berlin Secession and the renowned Munich-based group *Der Blaue Reiter* (The Blue Rider), led by Kandinsky. His vibrant evolution—moving from lyrical landscapes to compositions bordering on abstraction and imbued with deep mystical and spiritual significance—represents the artist's tragically short-lived legacy.

The majority of his paintings were disparagingly classified as "degenerate art" (*Entartete Kunst*) by the Nazi regime.
