Original six-panel byôbu folding screen from early Meiji period Japan, measuring 376 cm wide by 171.3 cm high, painted in colour and ink on mulberry paper with chrysanthemums, lespedeza and rapeseed, featuring gofun petals and gold-accented leaves, bordered by olive-green and greyish-blue silk brocade trims and housed in a black lacquered wooden frame; in excellent restored condition with minor age-related wear and a subsequently refurbished frame, includes a certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
A marvellous tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) showcasing a painting of a tranquil flower garden.
The composition bursts with an array of chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku) in different sizes and colours, blooming lavishly along the winding edge of a river. On the right, sprays of lespedeza 萩 (hagi) and yellow rapeseed 菜の花 (nanohana). Soft misted clouds partially veil the scene. Several chrysanthemum petals are worked in low relief using gofun 胡粉 (shell paste), and some leaves are subtly accented with gold.
Rendered in colour and ink on mulberry paper, the artwork is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a thin olive-green inner band and a broad greyish-blue outer band. It is encased in a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware engraved with scrolling foliage.
Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (second half 19th century)
Dimensions:
Total width 376 cm (2 × 64.4 cm, 4 × 61.8 cm); Height 171.3 cm
In a very good restored condition with minor signs of age on both sides, including some losses of gofun. The protective frame was expertly and expensively refurbished in Japan at a later date, requiring a high level of craftsmanship. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
This folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and displaying as a singular, striking work of art.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
