Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
An original six-panel byōbu folding screen in Kanô School style, 169.6 cm high by 363.6 cm wide, with lacquered wood, paper and gold leaf, dating to the 18th century Edo period, in excellent condition with restorations on both sides, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
An exquisite, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Kanô School-style painting on shiny gold leaf, depicting a dynamic landscape brimming with live around a river.
The composition depicts a dynamic natural setting animated by a rushing river that flows from the distance toward the foreground, gradually calming into a gently meandering stream. Along the water’s edge runs a thatched fence, set among blooming peonies 牡丹 (botan) and a tall moss-covered pine tree 松 (matsu), where a pair of green pheasant 雉子 (kigisu) rests on the slanting trunk.
In the stream, a group of white herons 白鷺 (shirasagi) gathers among aquatic plants such as Threeleaf arrowheads 沢瀉 (omodaka), while another pair approaches in flight. The entire scene is enveloped by dense gold-leaf clouds.
Executed in natural pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf. The painting is bordered by two silk trims: a slender gold brocade inner band and a broad navy blue outer band. The screen is set within a black lacquered wooden frame.
Period: Japan –18th century (Edo period)
Dimensions:
Total width: 363.6 cm (2 x 61.8 cm, 4 x 60 cm), Height: 169.6 cm
Considering its age, the screen is in very good condition, with traces of wear and restorations consistent with age on both sides. The reverse shows areas of repapering. The protective frame and mounting were later professionally restored in Japan, a process requiring highly specialised craftsmanship. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be placed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, we will add a certificate of authenticity.
