Original six-panel byôbu folding screen in Rinpa style from Japan, dating to the first half of the 19th century, with a total width of 368.4 cm and height of 171.8 cm, crafted in silk and gold leaf on lacquered wood with gofun modelling, in very good restored condition.
Description from the seller
A gorgeous tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Rinpa School-style painting executed with subtle low-relief detailing, depicting a lush and lively flower garden.
At the centre of the composition stands a pair of chickens, a colourful hen and a proud rooster, positioned beside a gently meandering river. They are surrounded by a rich variety of flowering plants, including numerous chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku), pink camellia 椿 (tsubaki), white and orange lilies, blue morning glory 朝顔 (asagao), blue bellflowers 桔梗 (kikyô), and other seasonal blossoms. These bloom along and behind a thatched fence that runs rhythmically across the panels. The flower heads, fence elements, and the fowl themselves are delicately modelled in low relief using gofun 胡粉 (shell paste), creating depth and texture against the shimmering surface. The entire scene is enveloped by dense clouds of gold leaf.
The screen is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender blue inner band and a broad black outer band. It is encased in a red lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.
Period: Japan – First half 19th century (Late Edo period)
Dimensions:
Total width 368.4 cm (2 × 63 cm, 4 × 60.6 cm); Height 171.8 cm
Considering its age, the screen is in very good restored condition, with some traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
This folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single, striking work of art.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
