AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A splendid tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) by Hashimoto Ryôka 橋本菱華 (act. Meiji–Taishô period) depicting a Shijô school painting of autumn plants 秋の草 (aki no kusa).

The composition presents a gently sloping landscape surrounding a lake with a selection of seasonal plants arranged across the lower section, leaving a large open space above. The ground is softly patinated with scattered gold, giving the surface a subdued, atmospheric character.

Depicted are typical autumn plants, including morning glory 朝顔 (asagao) with blue blossoms, yellow chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku), and bush clover 萩 (hagi).

The plants are rendered with fine, controlled brushwork, using light pigments and ink outlines.

Executed in colour and ink on paper with gold leaf accents. The screen is bordered by two silk brocade trims, a narrow black inner band and a broader soft green outer band with a geometric pattern. Set within a red lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.

Signed and sealed in the lower left corner.

Working within the Shijô school 四条派 tradition, he exhibited in early modern exhibitions and received prizes, including a third prize in 1901. He was also commissioned to produce sliding door paintings (fusuma-e 襖絵) for Daitoku-ji 大徳寺. His date of death is not recorded.
