Description from the seller
This expressive painting shows a bullfighter in the arena, rendered in powerful, warm colors. The figure stands close beside the dark head of the bull, while his richly adorned costume in yellow, blue and gold strongly contrasts with the deep red muleta. The paint is very thick and pastey, probably largely applied with the palette knife, giving the surface a pronounced relief and a vivid, almost tangible texture. The combination of red, ochre yellow, black and green heightens the drama of the scene and immediately evokes the atmosphere of a Spanish corrida.
Jan (John) Bévort (1917–1996) was a Dutch painter from Utrecht who trained at the Academy Artibus and became especially known for his powerful painting technique with the palette knife. He painted, among other things, landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, and still lifes and also created Southern European scenes under the pseudonym Camprio. Peter Brouwer (1935–2010) was also a Dutch painter and was a student of Bévort; in addition, he attended the Evening Academy in Utrecht and studied with, among others, Cor van Diggelen and Henk Bellaard. Brouwer developed his own, colorful and often more experimental style and painted city and sea views, landscapes and floral still lifes. The two artists were thus closely connected, but Brouwer distinguished himself by a generally bolder and more direct application of color.
