A Taishō period six-panel byōbu folding screen in Kanō School style, with lacquered wood, mulberry paper, silk and gold leaf on a gold ground, measuring 361.6 cm wide by 171.8 cm high, featuring a spring landscape with a plum tree and birds, original and in excellent condition, with a certificate of authenticity to be shipped.
Description from the seller
A great tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen), featuring a serene Kanô School-style painting executed on a radiant gold leaf ground, depicting an enchanting spring landscape.
The composition centres around an ancient, gracefully curving plum tree 梅 (ume), its gnarled branches covered with the season's first delicate pink blossoms, announcing the arrival of early spring. The landscape is enlivened by a variety of birds. A pair of mandarin ducks 鴛鴦 (oshidori) rests upon the moss-covered trunk arching over the water, while another pair of ducks gently floats along the winding stream. Above them, two Japanese tits 四十雀 (shijûkara) flutter amongst the branches. To the right, a dense bamboo grove rises behind an openwork rock formation. Large drifting clouds of gold leaf frame the tranquil landscape.
Executed in colour and ink on mulberry paper against a shimmering gold leaf background. The painting is bordered by two patterned brocade silk trims. The screen is set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with engraved gilt metal mounts decorated with scrolling foliage..
Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926)
Dimensions:
Total width: 361.6 cm (2 x 61.6 cm and 4 x 59.6 cm); Height: 171.8 cm.
The screen is in very good restored condition with expected age-related wear on both sides. The hinges have been reinforced and the reverse shows localised repapering patches. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall as a decorative work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
