Original six-panel byôbu folding screen from Japan, Bakumatsu period (1853–1867), with colour and ink on gold leaf mounted on mulberry paper, bordered by silk trims and set in a black lacquered wooden frame, depicting Kyoto landmarks such as Kiyomizu-dera and the Gion Festival procession, measuring 365.6 cm wide by 172.8 cm high, in excellent condition with restorations and a certificate of authenticity included.
Description from the seller
An enticing tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a genre painting on gold leaf, depicting a bird's-eye view of numerous famous sites in and around Kyôto 京都.
The composition presents a lively panorama filled with temples, shrines, residences, bustling streets, and scenic landmarks, all connected by winding roads and animated by countless figures engaged in daily activities and seasonal festivities. On the upper right side appears the famed Kiyomizu-dera 清水寺, and to the left of this scene the elegant Yamaboko Junkô 山鉾巡行 float procession of the Gion Festival 祇園祭 (Gion Matsuri) winds through the streets.
Many other well-known landmarks are scattered throughout the composition, separated and unified by dense gold-leaf clouds in the traditional manner.
Executed in colour and ink on gold leaf and mulberry paper. The painting is bordered by two brocade silk trims, a slender brown inner band and a broader dark blue outer band. The panels are set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.
Period:
Japan – Bakumatsu period (1853-1867)
Dimensions:
Total width 365.6 cm (2 × 62.4 cm, 4 × 60.2 cm), Height 172.8 cm
Considering its age, the screen is in very good restored condition, with wear and restorations consistent with age on both sides, including losses to the silk borders, strengthened hinges on the reverse, and areas of retouched gold leaf along the edges. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
