An amazing, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) presenting an elaborate Tosa School 土佐派 genre painting set against a backdrop of gold leaf, capturing lively celebrations across various sites and seasons during the Edo period, likely set in and around Kyôto.
The streets teem with life, energy and celebration. People from various social classes are shown savouring the pleasures of establishments that provide scenic views, delightful treats, tea, music, and more. Additionally, they are seen engaging in acts of reverence at shrines, and enjoying picnics. Please have a close look at the photos yourself to discover all the ongoing cheerful activities and refined details. These diverse scenes are encased within rich gold leaf clouds adorned with rippling dots in relief.
Colour and ink on gold leaf and mulberry paper. Surrounded by two silk borders, a thin grey one and wide silver one. Framed by a black lacquered wood with protective hardware engraved with scrolling foliage.
