AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Impressive Japanese religious wooden sculpture, consisting of a finely carved and richly polychromed standing figure, placed in a wooden zushi (厨子), a traditional Japanese shrine for religious statues.

The figure is depicted standing on a richly decorated pedestal, with hands in prayer before the chest. The head bears an elaborate crown or headpiece, and behind it there is a decorative halo of radiating rays. The clothing is exceptionally richly worked with carved and painted ornaments, and large portions of the original red, black, and gold decoration have been preserved.

The wooden zushi has a dark reddish-brown finish. The original doors are missing, so the statue is permanently visible. The construction and the many remaining layers of pigment and gilding give the whole an explicit antique character.

- Period: Late Edo period,

- Dimensions: approx. 36 × 19.8 × 13.2 cm (H × W × D)

Condition: The condition is appropriate for the age, but shows clear signs of use and aging.
The two doors of the zushi are missing. In addition there is wear, craquelé, small losses of polychromy and gilding. However, the remaining original painting and gilding are still substantially present.

The lot will be carefully packed and insured for shipping.
