Description from the seller
The Sign Alphabet and Metaphysical Geometries of the great master of Italian Neo-avant-garde!
Large Measurements 110x130 cm
This extraordinary, elegant and highly collectible graphic work realized by Lucio Del Pezzo (1933–2020), one of the absolute protagonists of Italian and international art of the second half of the twentieth century (Group 58, Pop Art and New Objectivity), belongs to the famous cycle of the "Casellari" / "Abachi" in which the artist arranges in a rigorous, geometric grid a repertoire of primordial symbols, playful forms, and saturated chromatic elements (red, cobalt blue, ochre, violet, turquoise).
The combination between the thick-artisan paper print and the shaped elements applied gives a three-dimensional, magnetic sculptural impact.
Lucio Del Pezzo (Naples 1933 – Milan 2020), born in Naples, was among the founders of Group 58 together with Mario Persico and Guido Biasi. In the 1960s he moved to Paris, where he lived and worked for twenty years, tying himself to the prestigious Galerie Maeght and participating in the Venice Biennale (with a solo room in 1966) and the Milan Triennale.
His work fuses irony, geometric rigor, references to Metaphysical De Chirico and to Pop Art, transforming archaic objects and symbols into totems and casellari of conceptual art visually unmistakable.
Lucio Del Pezzo’s works appear in the permanent collections of the world’s most prestigious museums:
MoMA – Museum of Modern Art (New York)
Centre Pompidou / MNAM (Paris)
Guggenheim Museum (New York)
Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam)
Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna (GNAM) Rome
Museo del Novecento (Milan)
Stazione Materdei (Naples Metro – permanent installation)
In major auction houses, Del Pezzo’s large casellari and screen prints with collages of cut-out elements are present and command prices well over €15,000.
