A six-panel late Edo period folding screen from Japan, titled Folding screen with Kanô School-style spring landscape, executed in pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf and set in a black lacquered wooden frame with silk trims, in excellent restored condition and including a certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
A refined mid-sized six-panel folding screen 屏風 (byôbu) with a Kanô School-style 狩野派 painting of an idyllic spring landscape.
The composition is centred on a prominent old cherry tree 桜 (sakura), its dark twisting trunk covered with abundant white blossoms. One long branch extends across the scene above a pair of green pheasant 雉子 (kigisu) moving along the water’s edge below.
Around the tree grow soft pink tree peonies 牡丹 (botan), while moss-covered rock formations frame the shoreline. At the lower left, a spray of yellow kinshibai 金糸梅 (Hypericum patulum), literally “gold-thread plum”, adds a further seasonal accent.
Across the water, softly rounded mountains rise in the distance, their peaks partly obscured by broad banks of gold-leaf clouds.
Executed in pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf. The painting is bordered by two patterned silk trims and set within a black lacquered wooden frame with protective metal fittings.
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (first half 19th century).
Dimensions:
Total width 278.2 cm (2 × 47.7 cm, 4 × 45.7 cm); Height 121.3 cm.
Considering its age, the folding screen is in very good restored condition with traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. Restorations include localised patches and touch-ups to the gold leaf, as well as areas of repapering to the reverse. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
